How To Pull Off a Rickroll In Real Life.

So here’s the thing. I’m not stupid. I’ve known about the Rickroll since way back when. I use the rickrolldb. Hell, I even produced an episode on the Rickroll for Rocketboom. Which is why I should have known better before clicking on this link:

Anyway, I wanted to rickroll Tim Shey back for my own dumbassedness. The problem was, I knew he’d be too smart to just click on a link. I had to take it one step further.

I had to rickroll him IRL.

After a quick search for singing telegrams in New York City, I called several as to their availability and eventually settled on Preppygrams, Yeah, it was a little expensive but why the frak not. I emailed the service with my request:

“Rickroll” Internet meme

In May 2007^[2] the song’s campy music video became the basis of an Internet meme known as “rickrolling”. It took its name from a 4chan meme known as “duckrolling”, a prank in which someone would post a blind quote to a post allegedly relevant to a discussion that upon viewing would prove to be a non sequitur - specifically, an image of a duck on wheels. Similarly, in a rickroll a poster provides a link they claim is relevant to the topic at hand which actually takes any one who clicks it to the Rick Astley video. The practice eventually became widespread enough to attract some coverage in the mainstream media.^[3][4]

In connection with the online meme, “Never Gonna Give You Up” was played and performed at some of the February 2008 protests against the Church of Scientology.^[5]

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of “Never Gonna Give You Up“‘s climb to #1, members of the Digg online community chimed out the lyrics on March 12, 2008. Anybody with the standard Digg setting of only showing comments -4 and higher saw the song’s lyrics from “We’re no strangers to love…” to the fade away verse of “Never gonna give, Never gonna give… give you up!… Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.”
